Title: Young, female teachers
Description: Similiar experiences?

MissHorseman - May 11, 2008 10:58 AM (GMT)
I wondered if any of you has had similiar experiences with me on the subject young, female teachers?

see, we have a new english teacher because our old teacher had a kid.
the new teacher is a quite young woman. I dont wanna stereotype, but when I say long, bleached blonde hair, clothes like a 16 yr old, tons of makeup and a heavy false tan I guess you guys kinda get the picture... Well, she seems extremely sweet and everything, but I notice that she favores the boys over the girls in our class..

To be blunt and honest I think she treats me unfair and disrespectful. I feel that she gives me a bit lower grades than what I really deserve. English is my definitive best subject and it does something about my self esteem when I feel that she might be the reason my grades will drop. But she doesn't treat all girls like this, it seems as though she has something personally against me. Something I thought abit about is that I might seem abit more mature than the other girls in my year, in the way I look, behave and the experiences I have. I think there is a possibility that she thinks that I wanna "compete" with her. I hope you guys understand what I mean, cause it's extremely hard to put this in words.

What I wanted to ask is that if any of you have had any similiar experiences with young female teachers? Have you ever noticed that they tend to treat boys and girls differently, and that they might have a "flirtish" attitude towards the boys and ignores the girls?

By all means I don't mean that this concerns ALL female teachers, I've had alot of young women as teachers who has been just great.

I hope you guys understand what I mean, because I suck so bad at explaining things :P

Well... I am young, female and currently in teacher training, majoring in English ie going to teach English. Other than that, I don't fit in the picture. But anyway.

I haven't had any problems with young, female teachers. I did have a problem with a female teacher, but it wasn't because she was female, but because she didn't know English (which she "taught"). When we wrote essays, she corrected things that were perfectly correct, and so on. She was altogether horrible.

But yeah, my teaching philosophy is to treat all students similarly. And I wouldn't be surprised if this was part of everyone's teaching philosophy. In the three classes I've taught the most, I do have favorites, but I do not show it. It's only natural for people to like others better. I'm sure that you have a favorite teacher, too. And then there are teachers that you don't like very much, but hopefully you treat them well anyway.

If you feel that your teacher doesn't treat you in a fair manner, you can either talk to her or you can go talk to your principal. If you can be mature as you said and you express your opinion to your teacher maturely she should be able to give you a mature response, as well. You should also be able to go to the teacher and ask her why she gave you the grade she did. She should be able to explain it.

Different teachers have different grading methods. I'm very strict with grading, one teacher that I worked with isn't. I once checked her students' English exams and she pretty much gave the kids a 9 where I would've given them a 7. But given that this was an elementary school level exam, it didn't have much content and the kids had a looooooong time to study for the exam, they should have been able to do the exam well... But in the end, it was her class, not mine.

But yeah, the best you can do is go talk to your teacher. We can't really do anything for you here. (Unless one of us IS your teacher, of course)

Thanks for the reply! :)
Once again I want to state that I didn't at all mean ALL young teachers!
Yes, I am thinking about talking to another teacher about it and see if he can give me some advice on this :)
