Title: Signature Limits
Description: We need to come to an agreement.
R@quel - August 10, 2008 12:54 AM (GMT)
Ok here's the deal...
I've had a few people PM regarding the board loading slowly due to large or numerous signatures. I've also had complaints that it's hard to read the board when people have too many graphics in their signature.
I've attempted to remedy the situation by lowering the character limits for signatures, but it appears that it not only doesn't help anything, but is preventing people from having acceptable signatures.
So here's what we're going to do. We're all going to decide what would be an appropriate limit for signatures, and it will become the law of the board.
I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of one signature graphic at a time, about 550x220 or along those lines. After we come to an agreement, I will remove all signature character limits.
Any comments/suggestions? I'd like your input and as always will take it into consideration in the final decision.

Sorry, didn't realize I locked the thread. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

I think that one signature picture is more than enough. And I suppose the size you suggested is good. My current signature is a bit larger than 550x220px, and I do feel that it's a bit too large.
R@quel - August 11, 2008 08:46 AM (GMT)
Actually I think your signature is just fine.
Minna - August 11, 2008 08:50 AM (GMT)
Well, if the limit was 550x220px, mine would be too big as it's 506x225px.
But when I said that I feel my signature's a bit too large, I meant that it's too big in my opinion. I've been meaning to change it and use a smaller one, but I haven't had the time/effort to make a new one. :)
R@quel - August 11, 2008 09:04 AM (GMT)
To me, a signature that size is not obstructing or obnoxious in any way. I find it perfect... So, how about something NO BIGGER than ^^^that signature.
Minna - August 11, 2008 10:23 AM (GMT)
You're the boss. :P
It still looks a bit too big for me, but yeah. We all have different opinions. :)

Yeah but I'm sure Raquel wouldn't mind if someone was 5 or 10 pixels over the limit, it's nothing major.. I think the limits you've given Raquel are very reasonable, I'm all for it
lolo - August 11, 2008 11:16 AM (GMT)
I think one signature from 550 by 220 is a very reasonable...
I think it's even a bit bigger than most of have....
I'm okay with it, and I'm willing to remove one of my signatures :)
and how about people who just have text in there signature.... is there also a limit for?.. just wondering
sanitarium180 - August 11, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)
Probably about 10 lines I'd guess, as I think it works out something similar to 220 pixels
TheColdestAugust - August 11, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
I cut off the signatures on my browser because it just got on my damn nerves.
I say one picture per signature. And that one picture shouldn't be more than 2-3 inches wide. If you don't want to put a picture, the 2-3 inch limit should be put on the text that you use.
But yeah. lol. I don't even remember what mine looks like, I haven't had them on in so long.
[EDIT]: I just looked... mine would BARELY fit the criteria! LOL. I should make it smaller.
american_beauty - August 11, 2008 12:14 PM (GMT)
Okay, I realise that my signature is one of those bigger ones.
But I am ready to comply with any new rules.
My proposition of a max. size of a siggy is 250x550.
The Unforgiven One - August 11, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
Ok, my thought of it all:
I think that 550X250 is a great size, since all of my own siggies are the size of 550X220. I do want to say I find it ashame if everyone could only use one sig, because I love the fact I can use two, for the simple reason that I love making them...
So, if only one sig is to be used, I'd find it ashame. But then again, if it works for everyone, it's a great thing to do :)

Should my one be changed? Sorry, it's pretty upright.. I was planning to change it anyway when I get home..

Well here's another thing to consider. It doesn't particularly bother me how long/horizontal a signature is, as long as it doesn't effect the page wrap. A few pixels off the mark lengthwise is not a big deal unless it effects the way the page loads. However, tall signatures are another story...
I think tall/vertical signatures are always distracting and contribute to making the board hard to read. So I would also propose that one guideline would be signatures can only be in the horizontal position, unless it's very very small.

I agree with you!

Agreed as well!

I agree with Anne on this one.
If people are bothered by signature, they can choose not to see them without forcing a whole board to change their siggies. And I have to say I haven't seen much big siggies here, I've had worst experience on that.

I don't think it's fair to tell everyone they have to turn off viewing signatures, just because some people are too inconsiderate to moderate themselves. If people did moderate themselves, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I don't think people should turn off siggies because the site won't load otherwise. Everyone should be able to view signatures. So if it comes to that, I agree with you.
Like I said, do whatever you think is neccassary; I only told you I love to have two - or one if two really is no possibility - siggies, of the size of 550X220; no bigger and no vertical siggies bigger than, I don't know, name any size you wish, or no vertical siggies at all.

That's fine with me, I'll remove my one.

Perhaps if you want two tags in your signature, you could have two smallish sized ones to add up to the agreed pixel length.
I think Raquel is being really generous with that 550x250 limit.
I think the main issue is the length of a tag, because say if a tag was 550x150, it would still look quite small compared.
On one forum i'm on, no images are allowed, and there is a three line text limit for signatures, you also can't use the IMG tag in threads, man, it's really strict :P
TheDutchess - August 16, 2008 07:17 PM (GMT)
At another board I'm on the limit is 300x100 or 3 lines of text.... so that's REALLY small.
I always make my sigs 550x220, and I think that if you have a vertical pic, you should just turn it horizontal... duh.

I now what you mean...
but it doesn't work that way most of the times
If you just turn it, the picture will be on it's side
:P
when you make a sig you just put the canvas in a horizontal way, and than put in the picture... they will be a bit smaller, or some pieces are left out
and if you fill the size (550-220px)in when you make your document it will never be vertical
TheDutchess - August 18, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)
I know, but I don't care if a pic's on it's side :biggrin
